What should I use to groom a double coat?
Rakes, Combs and Splitters
As you would with a regular brush, work in small sections. Run the rake or comb through the hair as you would a brush, and keep going over a single section until the tool runs through smooth.

Which dogs should not to be clipped?
The majority of double coated breeds are original working and herding dogs, living in cold, wet climates.
The first layer of the double coat (closest to the skin) is a short, soft, down like undercoat which regulates the dogs temperature acting as an insulating layer keeping the dog warm in colder months and keeping the dog cool in the warm summer.  The second part of the coat is made up of longer guard hairs that protect as a water and dirt repellent layer. This is the most important factor why dogs with double coats should not be clipped.
Clipping the coat, does not help the dog stay cooler, but it will actually interfere with the dog’s ability to regulate its natural body temperature. Also, removing the hair can leave the sensitive skin exposed to the damaging UV rays of the sun and also put your dog at risk for skin irritations like hot spots.
